Join Our Team
Hilborn LLP is currently recruiting for experienced, passionate individuals to join our team in the following positions:
Senior Associates are responsible for leading and/or performing — from start to finish — procedures relating to the preparation of year-end working paper files for all types of engagements. You will plan engagements, prepare budgets, prepare work programs, monitor progress, supervise junior staff and review their work, and prepare draft financial statements and management letters, etc., in accordance with professional accounting and assurance standards.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial
- 1,600 chargeable hours and 500 non-chargeable hours
Client
- Builds relationship with client staff at management level during the course of engagements
- Begins to build knowledge of client’s operations and their business
- Learns firm services and how to recognize sales and cross-sales opportunities with existing clients
- With more senior staff, may begin to participate in business development and promotion activities
Operational/Technical
- Intermediate/Senior file preparer: assists in planning and performs procedures in relation to audit, review, and compilation engagements, including preparation of financial statements
- Intermediate/Senior tax preparer: prepares tax returns (T1, T2, T3, etc.) of medium to hard difficulty
- Applies working methods and relevant tools (which are adapted to the situation) during the production of files
- Begins to analyze and document problematic situations, and may make recommendations from time-to-time
- May supervise more junior staff on sections of working paper files
- May review lower level work
- May review WIP, prepare billing analysis, and draft invoices
- Adheres to firm policies and procedures and Handbook requirements, and ensures that firm quality standards are met
Learning and Growth
- Completes professional designation requirements (academics and experience)
- Takes responsibility for own continuing professional development
- Trains more junior staff
- Acts as a “buddy” to more junior staff
- May act as a mentor to more junior staff
- May start to focus interest, select a service line (ex: audit, tax, etc.), and work on engagements of less variety (3-5 industries)
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Final year candidate for CPA designation or holds a CPA designation
Experience
- Minimum of 2-3 years of public practice or equivalent experience, preferably in a mid-sized accounting firm
- Audit experience is a must

- Has a minimum of 4 years of public practice or equivalent experience, preferably in a mid-sized accounting firm
Senior Tax Managers are responsible for managing all aspects of personal, corporate, partnership, and trust tax returns for firm clients in diverse industries. You will work with a team of staff in servicing our existing client list, while helping to drive the growth of the firm through annuity (repeat) business and special tax projects. You will help expand our practice by acquiring new clients or by helping develop new services.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial
- 1,200 – 1,300 chargeable hours
- Origination volume: annual target established as part of individual Annual Action Planning process
Client
- Becomes the primary contact point for client management
- Detects business development opportunities and — with Partner — makes new sales to existing or potential clients
- Recognizes sales and cross-sales opportunities with existing clients
- Organizes and participates in business development and promotion activities
- Develops a network to identify potential clients
Operational/Technical
- Reviews tax returns (T1, T2, T3, etc.) prepared by junior tax staff and assurance staff
- Takes the lead on planning and executing internal projects or processes
- Provides resource services for assurance staff
- Responsible for following-up with clients and getting work in the door
- Develops and delivers value-added tax planning strategies to clients in a timely and effective fashion
- Identifies and implements tax plans and engagements
- Reviews tax elections and filings (T2057, T2054, etc.) prepared by more junior staff
- Supervises junior tax staff
- Reviews and analyzes WIP, and prepares invoices. Monitor realization and profitability of engagements
Learning and Growth
- Responsible for ongoing professional development to stay current on tax legislation
- Assists in recruiting, training, and professional development of Managers and junior staff
- Coaches junior tax staff
- Participates in performance management system as an evaluator (30+ and annual evaluation)
- Plans, organizes, and implements technical training for the firm
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Post-secondary degree in business or finance; or,
- CPA or equivalent professional designation
- Completion of the In-Depth Tax Course (or equivalent)
Experience
- Minimum of 7-9 years of public practice or equivalent experience, preferably in a mid-sized accounting firm
- Minimum of 5 years of tax experience
Position Summary
Provide administrative support to other administrative staff, managers and partners in person, in-office, three (3) days a week.
Responsibilities – Administrative
Production Support
- Work as a team with other production staff to manage daily production workflow, including prioritizing and requesting additional staffing resources as necessary.
- Prepare, print, and assemble internal and external client work, including financial statements, tax returns, and formatting correspondence.
- Preparation of draft invoices in Practice Management system
- Export and prepare Excel WIP analyses
- Finalize and issue invoices
- Scan and file invoices to archive system
- Client File Management – Organize and assemble review packages for managers and partners
- Input review notes and changes
- Scan and file documents
- Preparation of representation letters and engagement letters
- Creation and maintenance of a file tracking system for follow-up with managers
- File lockdown preparation and coordination
Partner Support
- Preparation of monthly expense reports as needed
- Preparation of quarterly WIP/AR allowance reports as needed
- Email, calendar and scheduling support as needed
- Partner support with billings
Facilities/Front Office Support
- General office maintenance assistance and scanning
- General database maintenance (Practice Management)
- Client Caseware administration and updating of templates
- Front desk reception duties
- Pick up of Mail and sorting, filing and distribution
- Scan, PDF, courier and photocopy documents
- Ordering and management of office supplies
- Administrative support to internal committees – strategic planning sub-committee, social committee, IT committee
- Provide other administrative services as required and directed by the Director of Human Resources
Qualifications:
Education
- High School diploma
Experience
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a mid-sized accounting firm
- Strong computer skills, including MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, Caseware (preferred)
Other
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Strong communication skills (oral and written)
- Strong time management skills
- Strong typing skills (minimum of 45 wpm)
- Detail-oriented
